Frequently Asked Questions

What is HypnoBirthing®?

HypnoBirthing® is self-hypnosis, relaxation and breathing techniques to be used for pain relief during labour and birth. It is a complete antenatal course giving you all the tools you need for a calm, confident and more comfortable birth.

Who is HypnoBirthing® suitable for?

HypnoBirthing® is suitable for first time mums and mums who have had children before.
We also help women who are scared of birth because they have never done it before, who are anxious because of a previous bad birthing experience or who just want a calmer, easier more natural birth experience.

Will I be out of it or in a trance if I do HypnoBirthing®?

No, absolutely not. Hypnosis is simply a feeling of relaxed concentration, just like when you are reading a good book. If it is a really good one, you are still awake, and aware of what is going on around you – but you can ‘tune out’ the distractions. That is hypnosis.

Can you guarantee a pain free and drug free labour?

No. There are many factors that can affect a birth, some of which are outside our control. Also, like any childbirth education class, the success of the techniques is related to the amount of practice you put in.

65-70% of HypnoBirthing® mothers require no pain relief. It helps reduce the length of labour and the requirement for medical intervention.

Remember – The aim of HypnoBirthing® is not a completely pain free picture perfect natural birth (although it is possible). It is to have a calmer, easier more comfortable birth – where you are in control – and in a way that most mirrors nature.

When should I start the course?

Anytime from 26 weeks onwards is good. This will give you time to absorb the course content and practice all the relaxation exercises and techniques.
If you are getting closer to the birth do get in touch and we can discuss a modified course to suit your needs.

Does my birthing partner have to attend the course?

Yes, birthing companions are a very important part of the process. Instead of your husband or partner being a helpless onlooker, they become a central part of the birthing process, helping you stay calm and focused on the techniques you have been taught.

Can the course be done in one day or over a weekend?

No – the syllabus is designed to be taught in classes usually spaced about a week apart. This is for your benefit so that you can absorb the concepts and practise between classes. Anyone offering courses in any other format are not likely to be registered as a HypnoBirthing® Practitioner. See the links page to check the list of approved teachers.

Is it possible to learn through a home study course?

No, the official book and CD are designed to be accompanying material for a practitioner led course. The practitioner will guide you through relaxation sessions that are not covered in the book and you will get practical guidance on techniques.
